Series and volumes
Volumes, reading order, collecting a whole set and keeping track of what you still want.
Volumes
A series works in one of two ways, depending on what you have. Pick yours, then follow it below.
Series rows keep ownership visible alongside progress.
Manga volumes inside one item. The series is one item on your shelf and its volumes are a grid inside it. Logging a volume ticks it read, and the card counts how far along you are. This section and Collecting cover it.
Books or comics grouped from separate items. Each volume is an item of its own, and you group them into a series with one card and a reading order. Reading order covers it.
Open the series from your shelf and press Manage volumes under the title card (on a phone, the Volumes row). Its Volumes card says how many you own and have finished, and which volume is next.
Read a volume? Press Next up to tick the next one, or set Tap marks (Click marks with a mouse) to Finished and tap any volume. With Tick them in order on, which is the default, ticking Vol. 7 also ticks everything before it.
Or log a session of the series. The sheet asks which volume, and marks it read.
How a series sits on your shelf
The shelf card counts how far along you are the way the series' page does, for example “Read 8 of 12 · 10 owned”.
A series added in one tap (from Discover, the search or someone's shared page) starts with no volumes owned. You mark the ones you have.
When you log a volume
When you log a session of a series, the sheet asks which volume and marks it read. Remove the session and the volumes it ticked are taken back.
Tick them in order
Untick Vol. 7 before changing anything else and it takes back what it ticked. Any other untick only unticks that one.
While an earlier volume is still unread, the card, Home and Next up name that earlier one as Next unread. The page also asks once whether to mark those earlier volumes read, with Undo.
Reading out of order? Turn the switch off. It is kept for that series on this device. Your default is Tick them in order in Settings > Shelves.
Reading order
Comics and books are items of their own that you group into a series, with one card, the volumes in reading order and a name you can change.
A run on your shelf and on Home
Each volume keeps its own cover and sessions. Grouped into a run, the shelf shows one card with the stack behind it, progress across the whole run, and the volumes in reading order when you open it.
Add next uses the preceding volume's format, tags and ownership status, and you can change them before saving.
Home keeps a run moving: finish a volume and the next one on your shelf is offered under “Next in Saga”. Grouping is yours alone, and ungrouping never deletes anything.
Each volume has its own number, from the catalogue or its title. A gap in the numbering shows as an empty numbered slot, and a volume with no number of its own, like an annual, comes last.
An empty slot carries a quiet Add volume 4. It opens the add form with the series, number and format filled in. Nothing is added until you save.
Renaming a series
Rename series changes a series' name for every volume in it, and History and Stats follow.
Open the series from its stack on the shelf.
Press Rename series, above the volumes, and type the new name.
Press Save. Undo is on the message if you change your mind.
Where Rename series is
Rename series is above the volumes when you open the series from its stack, beside the name in List view, and under Change series on a volume's page.
A name another of your series already has
If another of your series on that shelf already has the name, you are asked whether to merge the two. A merge moves the volumes and removes nothing.
A stack the shelf grouped by itself
A stack the shelf grouped by itself is renamed the same way.
Saving makes it a series of yours holding every volume of it on that shelf, whatever list each is on.
Undo puts the stack back as it was.
The names ShelfChronicles gives a series
When ShelfChronicles names a series by itself (a scanned ISBN, a catalogue match, an import), it leaves format and edition words off the end, so Batman by Grant Morrison Omnibus Vol. 1 joins Batman by Grant Morrison.
A name you type is kept as you typed it.
A series that kept an older name
A series named before that rule keeps its name. It asks once instead, above its volumes: “Merge Batman by Grant Morrison Omnibus into Batman by Grant Morrison?”
Merge moves its volumes into the plain series, with Undo on the message.
With no series of the plain name, it offers to rename instead.
Keep as it is answers it for good, on every device.
Collecting a series
Owning a series and reading it share one grid: every volume Owned, Wishlist, Pre-ordered or Missing, with a folded corner once read.
Open the series' page and find Your set, the grid of its volumes.
Tap a volume for its choices: Owned, Wishlist, Pre-ordered and Missing.
To mark with one tap instead, set Tap marks (Click marks with a mouse) to Owned or Finished.
For a long run, Mark volumes owned takes numbers and ranges like 1-38, 40 in one go.
What the tiles and the two counts show
The grid keeps owning and reading apart: a tile for every volume from 1 to the end of the series, each Owned, Wishlist, Pre-ordered or Missing.
An owned volume you have not read is an outline. One you have read is filled, with its top corner folded down like a finished page.
A volume you read without owning it keeps its own state, with the folded corner on top.
Above the grid, Owned counts the volumes you own and Read every volume read, owned or not.
The count, the COMPLETE SET stamp and Set the count
When every volume is owned the set gets its COMPLETE SET stamp.
When the catalogue has no volume count for a series, Set the count under the heading takes yours.
From the keyboard
From the keyboard, the arrow keys move between volumes and Space or Enter does what a tap does.
A volume with its own page, and collector details
A volume that still has its own page says so. Its options open that page, and what you choose there changes the page too.
What you still want
Wishlist and Pre-ordered are for the volumes you are hunting. They sit in the grid beside what you own, so a glance shows the gaps.
In the series' grid, tap a volume and choose Wishlist or Pre-ordered.
Copy missing list puts the gaps on your clipboard as one line, ready for a message to a shop or a friend.
When a volume arrives, mark it owned from the grid.
Wishlist volumes count as wishes too
Wishlist volumes count as wishes: your profile's wishlist, its share link and trade matches list them, and Settings > Who sees what counts each one in the wishlist's figure.
A whole item you want, rather than one volume, goes on the Wishlist:
Owned, wishlist and the rest.
